Successful Gully Rehabilitation at Big House

Verterra’s Land Rehabilitation Team successfully completed the Big House Gully Rehabilitation Project in May 2024, just outside Rockhampton, Queensland.

🐠Delivered as part of the Fitzroy Water Quality Program—funded through a partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation—the project focused on reducing fine sediment runoff into the Great Barrier Reef via the Fitzroy River.

📸A recent site inspection highlights the excellent outcomes of the rehabilitation efforts, including stable, well-vegetated landforms and enhanced pasture conditions throughout the contributing catchments.

🐟Importantly, the project has led to a measurable reduction in sediment reaching the Reef, contributing to improved water quality and healthier marine ecosystems.

👨‍🌾The local landholder involved in the project has praised the results, expressing strong satisfaction and pride in supporting efforts to protect one of Australia’s most iconic natural assets.

💬“This project shows what can be achieved when landholders, science, and funding partners come together,”
“It’s a win for agriculture, a win for the land, and a win for the Reef.”

💧The Big House Gully project is one of many initiatives working to secure the long-term health of the Great Barrier Reef by tackling threats at their source, on the land.
