Full-Time | Brisbane Based
We are looking for a commercially minded Business Development Associate to help grow our presence across ecological restoration, nature-based solutions, and ecosystem services.
This role would suit someone who enjoys building relationships, identifying opportunities, supporting proposals, and working closely with technical teams to help turn client needs into practical project opportunities.
The successful candidate will work closely with Verterra’s Managing Director and General Manager, gaining exposure to executive decision-making, and building a pathway toward a senior leadership role.
What You’ll Do
Business Development & Growth
Help identify and pursue new business opportunities nationally and internationally in ecological engineering, natural capital and ecosystem services.
Build and manage relationships with clients, government agencies, industry partners, Indigenous organisations, and research institutions.
Represent Verterra at conferences, industry events, and stakeholder meetings.
Collaborate with the Managing Director, General Manager and Technical Teams on proposals, scoping documents, EOI responses, partnership proposals, tender responses and client communications.
Assist with development of frameworks, systems, and processes to improve efficiency in business development and strategic functions.
Strategic Support
Provide direct support to the Managing Director in strategic planning, opportunity assessment, business models and organisational development.
Participate in high-level meetings, follow up actions, and ensure continuity across business initiatives.
Work closely with the Managing Director to develop an executive-level understanding of operations, innovation pathways, and corporate strategy.
Assist in the preparation of presentations, board papers, and strategic briefing documents.
Work with internal and external teams to develop marketing collateral and thought leadership content to help build Verterra’s brand presence in Ecological Engineering across priority sectors.
What we’re looking for:
Degree in Environmental Science, Agriculture, Forestry, Environmental Engineering, Business, Natural Resource Management, Sustainability, or related field.
Five to ten years' experience in business development, consulting, or environmental services (the right candidate matters more than years).
Strong networker with excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
Outstanding written communication comfortable drafting proposals, reports, and client communications.
Solid understanding of environmental management and the ability to translate technical concepts into business opportunities.
Highly organised, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities.

Verterra is seeking a motivated Junior Business Support team member to join our growing ecological engineering business. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career professional to build hands-on experience across business administration, CRM, account management, tender identification and management, project accounting, project controls, bid coordination, reporting and business systems.
Working closely with the General Manager and broader operations team, you will support the business across administration, account management, tender identification and management, project controls, financial administration, AI integration, CRM maintenance and business reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
Support the use, maintenance and ongoing improvement of Verterra’s CRM system, including client records, account information, opportunities, leads and business development pipeline information.
Assist with account management support, including client follow-up, meeting notes, action tracking, account updates and coordination between clients, the General Manager and project teams.
Support tender identification and management by monitoring relevant tender portals, recording opportunities in the CRM, tracking deadlines, coordinating internal inputs and maintaining tender registers.
Assist with project accounting, including project setup, cost tracking, invoicing support, financial administration and margin reporting.
Support project controls, including project documentation, reporting, registers, workflows, risk records, compliance records, internal project performance tracking and reporting.
Assist with bid and tender management, including tender identification, opportunity tracking, document preparation, formatting, compliance checks, submission support and post-submission follow-up.

We are seeking a commercially minded and relationship-focused Account Management Lead to grow our strategic accounts, develop new client opportunities and help turn our signature environmental solutions into predictable, profitable and repeatable growth. This is a senior, non-technical role combining strategic account management and pro-active business development. You will be able to connect client challenges with Verterra’s science-based capabilities, progressing opportunities from initial conversation through to repeat, multi-site and multi-year programs.
You will work closely with our General Manager, Sector Leads, Project Managers, Productisation Lead and technical specialisits. Our technical leaders will remain responsible for technical scope and project delivery – your role will be to create commercial momentum, coordinate the client journey, and ensure opportunities are followed through.
The opportunity
As Account Management Lead, you will help establish a disciplined and repeatable approach to account growth and business development.
You will manage priority accounts and prospects, maintain visibility across the sales pipeline and coordinate opportunities from discovery through to contract award and handover. You will also help convert successful projects and pilots into deeper client relationships and longer-term programs.
This role offers considerable autonomy and the opportunity to shape how Verterra approaches strategic accounts, client development and commercial growth.
Key responsibilities
In this role, you will:
Develop and operate Verterra’s account management, business development and go-to-market systems in line with our growth strategy, financial targets and priority sectors.
Identify and prioritise strategic clients and prospects based on solution fit, existing relationships, commercial potential and opportunities for integrated, multi-site or multi-year work.
Develop practical account growth plans that map key stakeholders, client needs, opportunities, risks and actions over a 12–36-month horizon.
Build strong relationships across client organisations, reducing reliance on any single contact and positioning Verterra as a trusted long-term partner.
Translate client challenges into clear pathways to Verterra’s services and signature solutions, supported by relevant evidence, case studies and commercial value propositions.
Maintain the CRM as the trusted source of information for leads, opportunities and proposals, including values, stages, margins, decision dates, owners and next actions.
Lead regular account and pipeline reviews with the General Manager and Sector Leads, helping determine which opportunities Verterra should pursue, defer or decline.
Progress opportunities from initial discovery to award, using clear criteria to assess strategic fit, client potential, margin, capacity, risk and likelihood of success.
Coordinate proposals and pursuits with technical teams, maintaining commercial oversight of scope, pricing, procurement, contracts, variations, renewals and handover into delivery.
Use project milestones, client reviews and delivery insights to identify follow-on opportunities and convert one-off projects into repeat, cross-service, multi-site or recurring programs.
Capture market and client insights that help improve Verterra’s solutions, pricing, case studies and future pursuits.
About you
You are a confident relationship builder and commercially astute operator who knows how to create momentum in a complex professional services environment.
You are organised, proactive and comfortable working across technical and commercial teams. You can challenge priorities constructively, recognise when an opportunity is not the right fit and ensure commitments and next steps do not fall through the cracks.
You do not need to be the technical expert. However, you must be able to build credibility with technical professionals, understand complex client needs and translate specialist capabilities into clear commercial, operational and risk-reduction value.
You will ideally bring:
Demonstrated experience in account management, business development or commercial growth within professional, technical or advisory services.
A track record of growing complex business-to-business or government accounts into longer-term relationships and programs.
Experience developing account plans, stakeholder maps and sales or pursuit strategies.
Strong capability in CRM management, pipeline qualification, forecasting and commercial follow-through.
Sound commercial judgement across scope, pricing, gross margin, proposals, procurement, contracts, risk and negotiation.
The ability to navigate complex client organisations and engage effectively with both senior decision-makers and technical specialists.
Confidence coordinating and influencing multidisciplinary teams without needing direct authority.
A practical, action-oriented approach and a strong commitment to following through and closing the loop.
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent tertiary qualification in business, commerce, marketing, environmental science, engineering, natural resource management or a related discipline.
Existing networks across mining, energy, agriculture, water, utilities, natural resource management or environmental markets would be highly regarded.
