Management of noxious weeds

Specifications

  • Client: Transfield Worley Power Services and RATCH Australia Corporation
  • Scope:

Risk assessment identified weed infestation as one of the main issues requiring detailed investigation to inform a closure plan. A risk-based plan was subsequently developed, detailing legislative compliance requirements, current weed status, potential weed risks, control strategy, measures, treatment schedules, incident management procedures and weed identification. Verterra is presently preparing to implement the plan.

  • Challenge:

In addition to erosion issues, an ash-dam site and surrounding power station property carried significant infestation of a range of Class 2 and 3 weeds (as defined in the Queensland Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act).  Infestation from surrounding properties presented an ongoing challenge.

  • Solution:

Verterra undertook a risk-assessment approach to weed management planning and identified the neighbouring mine site as a significant source of ongoing weed infestation. Verterra proposed a weed management buffer was proposed as part of the overall property weed management plan. Armed with the underlying rationale, the client successfully negotiated with the neighbour to implement the proposed buffer. Verterra’s weed management plan also established a program and procedures for ongoing noxious weed management on site.

  • Benefit to Client:

The approach delivered a sound, evidence-based approach to weed management that has been successful in supporting regulatory approval for ash-dam closure.
