Lama Lama Land Trust forest management evaluation

Lama Lama Land Trust forest management evaluation

Specifications

  • Client: Lama Lama Land Trust
  • Scope:

Yintjingga Aboriginal Corporation (Lama Lama Land Trust) completed the first stage of a timber harvesting contract with Cape York Timbers in 2016.  Verterra undertook a desktop review followed by a field inspection and evaluation of harvesting undertaken in 2016/17.   Operations were assessed against the evaluation framework to ensure regulatory, environmental and forest sustainability objectives had been met.

  • Challenge:

Yintjingga Aboriginal Corporation (Lama Lama Land Trust) is responsible for management of forests on indigenous land in a remote area of Cape York in northern Queensland.  Access to the region is difficult, and is only accessible during the dry season.  Land information on the region is limited.  Lama Lama required an evaluation of forest harvesting operations to ensure the area was managed responsibly, and to identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Solution:

Prior to site inspection Verterra undertook a desktop study and prepared an evaluation framework covering all aspects of the forest management operations relevant to the client.  The framework provided a workflow to enable efficient and comprehensive field evaluation, and ensure that all matters of interest were addressed.  Verterra invited Lama Lama Rangers to attend the field inspection to promote two-way exchange of knowledge and information.

  • Benefit to Client:

The evaluation provided Lama Lama with confidence that forest management operations were being carried out in a responsible, competent and environmentally appropriate manner and in compliance with relevant legislation.  Importantly, the evaluation identified and recommended a number of areas for capacity building and improvement.  This has provided Lama Lama with a plan to implement a program of training continuous improvement.
