Synergy Carbon Funding Project
Specifications
-
Scope:
Based on field sampling and data analysis provision of expert advice to the client on:
- expected sequestration performance of a 5,000 ha forest sink investment
- variance around the expected mean sequestration performance
- cumulative sequestration performance over a 30 year period
- critical evaluation of the estate manager's productivity prediction tool (‘Mallee Bull’)
- assessment of the adequacy of FullCAM to provide forecasts of the carbon sequestration potential
-
Challenge:
The client required confidence tha their proposed investment in oil mallee and tree plantations for carbon abatement would deliver the forecast levels of carbon sequestrations. Independent data for both biomass partitioning plus tree and mallee growth rates were very limited.
-
Solution:
In the absence of reliable, independent data, Verterra undertook a rapid sampling program at sufficient intensity to provide an acceptable level of confidence in standing biomass levels. This was used to develop projections based on upper and lower bounds of confidence informed by uncertainty analysis. The approach allowed the client to have confidence that yields within an acceptable range would be achieved, withought the expense required to provide a high level of precision in the mean yield.
-
Benefit to Client:
The project provided the client with an objective, evidence based assessment of the likely productivity of its carbon investments, and the level of uncertainty around mean estimated sequestration. This in turn helped the client identify potential to understand the potential to improve returns from the project, and guide future investment decisions.
