Stabilisation of Collinsville Ash Dam

Stabilisation of Collinsville Ash Dam

Specifications

  • Client: Transfield
  • Scope:

Verterra identified 28 erosion sites of concern on a capped ash mound with banks up to 1 in 4.5. By visually identifying where water concentrated, Verterra constructed a combination of earth berms to redirect and disperse water along low-fall contours and sediment traps to slow movement and encourage deposition. Disturbed earth was “armoured” with rolled-out hay bales, seeded and fertilised to encouraged rapid pasture establishment. In excess of 120 truckloads of soil were moved over a period of four days, followed by hay-bale “armouring”, sowing of pasture seed and fertilising immediately prior to the onset of seasonal storm rains, providing ideal conditions for rapid grass germination.

  • Challenge:

The client was able to successfully stabilise the site and remove potential environmental liabilities at a fraction of the cost of alternative approaches proposed by others.

  • Solution:

Verterra brought a practical, experienced-based approach to remediation of erosion and stabilisation of the ash-mound by applying principles of drainage and erosion management from forest operations and dirt road maintenance, combined with an understanding of inherent soil stability characteristics, revegetation practices and use of low-cost materials, to achieve a highly successful, very low cost solution.

  • Benefit to Client:

The client was able to successfully stabilise the site and remove potential environmental liabilities at a fraction of the cost of alternative approaches proposed by others.
