Springwater Carbon Sequestration Project

Springwater Carbon Sequestration Project

Specifications

  • Client: Santos
  • Scope:

Verterra in collaboration with Corporate Carbon, registered and manages a carbon abatement project with the Clean Energy Regulator.  Verterra is responsible for all technical aspects of Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) creation and verification, including: stratification of the plantation resource; inventory of plantation productivity; destructive sampling for development of allomeric equations; calculation of net carbon abatement; liaison with project auditors.  ACCU’s are a tradeable financial security, and require a very high level of due diligence and validation.

  • Challenge:

Santos established Western White Gum plantations as a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable solution to management of coal seam gas water, but derived no financial return from the environmental service of carbon sequestration provided by these plantations.

  • Solution:

Verterra identified the opportunity to register Santos’ plantations under the Federal Government’s Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI), and presented an unsolicited proposal to Santos.  In collaboration with Corporate Carbon, Verterra successfully registered a carbon abatement project with the Australian Federal Government’s Clean Energy Regulator.

  • Benefit to Client:

The opportunity identified by Verterra has enabled the client to generate significant value from an existing asset, which may be realised either directly through sale of ACCU’s, or indirectly by offsetting potential future carbon liabilities.

  • Market Sector: Mining
  • Capabilities:
    • Carbon bio-sequestration
  • Location: Queensland
